I’m a dual citizen with a kangaroo on one passport and an eagle on the other. I attended a small high school of about 800 girls in Sydney, Australia.
We pursued our education under the banner of the school’s motto, PER ASPERA AD ASTRA… through struggles to the stars.
We were encouraged to try new things without fear of failure, valuing the journey more than the outcome. So, while I played flute well, I fielded poorly at softball. I never made callbacks for singing or dance auditions but held my own in stage productions and on the debating team. I had a natural ability for rowing, but not for the 5am start. And so I continued to try new things and learn more about myself, through success and failure, discovering my passion for filmmaking and storytelling along the way.
I think my prospective college is as different as possible from my quaint high school. As of Fall 2012 I am a Trojan at The University of Southern California, majoring in Film and Television at the School of Cinematic Arts. Living in the thriving city metropolis that is downtown Los Angeles, I will be exposed to all kinds of people and cultures, which will greatly assist in my ability to be a successful storyteller.
The relativity to ‘Hollywood’, the film capitol of the world, means that my education will be enriched by the best filmmaking facilities available – as well as being guided by the most knowledgeable industry personnel.
The dean of the School of Cinematic Arts, Elizabeth M. Daley has stated that, “one of the hardest things to understand is the culture of filmmaking. You’re not gonna get that out of a book. Come here and you’ll understand.”
The close-knit Trojan family fosters a sense of family that ensures students have access to the best internships and professional connections available. The School of Cinematic Arts is supported financially and otherwise by alumni and non-graduates alike, including directors John Singleton, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
My transition from a small all-girls school in Sydney, Australia to the large worldwide-ranked University of Southern California is overwhelming, and will undoubtedly present its challenges, however, when you challenge yourself, you rise above your own expectations. As Les Brown said, “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars”.
